Our First “Live” Event . . .

GroupPicture-by Ann McDonald-x40. . . was held on May 6-8, 2013.  It was a small, select group and a wonderful experience.  About 18 of us (not all are in the picture)  met for 3 days at the Lanier Theological Library in Houston, Texas.  We came from various parts of the US and Canada.

(Pictured Lf-Rt:
Row 3: Lee, John, Patrick, Craig, Gary)
Row 2: Ron, Mike, Lacey, Ann;
Row 1: Dianne, Jane, Charmaine, Edward, Twila;
Front: Edward.

Our topic was “Reading the Bible Like Jesus and Paul:  pursuing the question of The NT’s Use of the Ancient Scriptures”

This was a very exciting and engaging topic.  We chose various texts in Paul from which to study.  We also explored direct implications for how we read the Bible today.

Speakers and Topics

Our speakers consisted of a few of our own team members, with a special guest on the last day:  Edward Fudge.  This approach was deliberate, since one of our goals is to develop our own abilities in Bible study and teaching.  All are listed below.

Available Recordings

Our first priority (and our focus) was a coherent and valuable “live” conference.  Recordings of the conference were actually an experiment by attempting to “live stream” some of the presentations to other members and recording them via the live stream.   We expected some problems with it since it was not something we had a budget for or even the time for, and we did experience that.  For example, all 5 of the keynote presentations by Gary Collier and the 1 by Mike Wilkinson had “fatal” audio or video problems that rendered the recordings unusable.  However, 4 videos of other speakers were usable.

These recordings are NOT of the highest video or audio quality, and they do not do justice to the speakers or to the energy of the attendees for the live speeches.  Nevertheless, they are offered here with the approval of the speakers in case you want to get a taste of the conference.

PRESENTER PRESENTATION INFO AND ABSTRACT ____ TO WATCH THE VIDEO
Edward Fudge (Houston, Tx)  Edward speaks at length about two things:  his book "The Fire that Consumes," and three passages of NT use of the the OT.  He offers a very comprehensive and interesting look at both topics, and the class was offered when Edward had just spent months of recovery in and out of the hospital for severe back complications.  This was a very touching and much appreciated couple of presentations.

[You should know the following about the video:  (a) It is only slightly edited and the audio gets better as the video proceeds.  (b) It starts off with a single screen aimed at his powerpoint slide using a built-in web cam (not a very good shot).  (c) After 20 minutes, we get a much nicer split-screen with a closeup of Edward speaking.  (d) At about the 127 minute mark, his first presentation ends and the second one begins with him sitting in a different chair.  (e) the video ends at about 157 minutes.]

Twila Higginbottom (Arkansas).  Here's a short summary by the speaker:

This talk summarizes how the Lord led me to deeper, more meaningful Bible study.  Then how that study helped me see the over-arching story of scripture.  Seeing the meta-narrative that encompasses the whole of our Bible, brought scripture alive and helped me begin a pursuit of contextual Bible study that results in 'living into' our great Story.

John Eoff (Texas).  Here's a short summary by the speaker:

The purpose of my presentation is to offer possibly unique, but certainly unpopular, opinions concerning certain prophecies in order that anyone hearing such opinion will have a firmer grasp upon the exact fulfillment of the prophecies, thus adding strength to his faith in both the prophet and the record in which we learn of the prophecy and the historical record of fulfillment. The last portion of my presentation deals with the prophecy of Jesus to be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.  The thoughts are contained in a (very) short book entitled “Was Jesus Three Days and Three Nights in the Heart of the Earth?” which is available in paper back format as well as Kindle from Amazon.com and was written with the encouragement and help of Dr. Ron McRay.
